  • bunch of weird light problems. solution

    Just FYI:
    This happened to me:
    1. vraylights didnt seem to work anymore, except dome lights
    2. if the domelight in 3ds max is set to 3, it gets set to 2.550 in vantage.... if its 1 it will be .850 in vantage
    3. motion blur seems to have the same quality of blur, no matter what is set the settings to.
    4. vraylights dont show up in the render. They should be big white planes, but nothing is visible. Seems like they arent part of the render at all although they show up in the listing if i transfer the scene to vantage. I can adjust them, but nothing happens.
    5. vantage sun doesnt work anymore either

Tried with a new scene and the only thing that changed was that the numbers between max and vantage corrected itself. So now domelight intensity 1 is 1 in vantage also. But lights doesnt work.

SOLVED: what worked was to uninstall vantage and re-install it.

    windows 11, ryzen 9 5950x, rtx 3090

It seems I spoke too soon. The re-install seems to have fixed the lights except the dome light intensity conversion. Once I opened up the scene that i was having the issue with, the domelight issue came back. So now 1 intensity in 3ds max is 0.850 in vantage. Im wondering if this can be because someone converted the scene settings from inches to centimeter in 3ds units setup?

It looks like color corrections could affect the dome intensity value as displayed in Vantage. In other words, multipliers get baked into this value, but the render result should match V-Ray.

Are you still observing issues other than the dome intensity mismatch?

Vantage does not support raytraced motion blur. It's a completely different post-effect in Vantage, so it doesn't use any V-Ray settings.

ah didnt think of the color correction... ill check if I have one on the domelight HDRI image.
I got the lights back. so now they work.
The motion blur doesnt work good at all on the scene im doing. Maybe because its a lot of refractions and reflections. Its basically a closeup scene inside a soda glass with lots of bubbles moving around. One of the glitches is that it looks like buckets are missing in the motion blur render. I know its a post effect but still it looks like chunks (like buckets) are missing. Beside that artifact the motion blur just looks like hairs, not smooth at all. Not sure which setting controls the quality of the motion blur, but ive tried adjusting the sample amount, amount of time for the aperture noise threshold, but nothing worked

There is no quality setting for the motion blur, only the blur amount measured as exposure time under the blur checkbox.

You could render to EXR which will include a Velocity channel (screen space) and use third party software to try to achieve better post-processed motion blur.
