That's how the live link to Vantage works - it uses V-Ray GPU IPR in distributed rendering mode.
In Vantage, make sure that the live link server is started - you can check this in the "Live link" menu.

Did you check the "Live link" menu in Vantage and also the Vantage log (from the Help menu) ?
Maybe you unchecked the checkbox that starts the live link server by default, it has happened to other users before.

I'm now getting the same error. It says local machine not used for distributed rendering and no servers can join!

Vantage logs say "started live link 2 server on port 12701

What's the status in the "Live link" menu in Vantage ?
Can you try disabling any firewalls you have to make sure they are not blocking the connection ?

The default live link port is 20701, not 12701. If you've changed the port, the 3dsmax live link script will fail to connect unless you change it manually. It's better to use the default port in Vantage, it can be selected from the live link menu.

That worked. Thankyou. Not sure why the port was different, but all is well now. This is freakin awesome!
