  • Urgent! No transparent background?

Hi! I was relying on a set of Vantage renders today, but I need the sky to come out as transparent and without fringing. First off, in 3ds max I have set the VraySky in the Vray environment settings rather than in the traditional 3ds max environment map, to fix that fringing. It works in max. But when the scene is linked with Vantage, I 1) can't save out png or exr with a transparent background from Vantage. 2) One could think as for backup solution, the alpha file could be used. But the ones written out has huge problems with sky fringing, hence it's not using the settings from 3ds max.

    So my questions:
    1) Isn't it possible to write out files with transparent background with Vantage?
    2) If yes, how. If no, what would be your take on this?

Thanks philip. I have it, but this option only gives me the background as a masking element, which again gives issues with fringing. And I would rather not go around this issue with defringing in photoshop, as it destroys small details.

rendering over black with alpha is probably the way to go to avoid edge fringing.

Today I had to rely on a fallback file which had an all-3d-setup. Project delivered, so now I just need to figure out how to deal with this in Vantage in the future.
Somehow, the png alpha suddenly works now, in another scene but hey. I swear this button didn't make a transparent VraySky earlier today, so perhaps it was just something locally going on. I work with max -> live link to Vantage.

Now, say that this checkbox does work consistently, so that the Sky is indeed coming out in the png as transparent. Let's go back to the fringing issue. I believe that Vantage has its Sky system implemented from Vray's model and that it just fetches parameters from max to use with native Vantage sky.
This Vantage Sky gives a simple bush fringing like this ...

... even if the setup (mentioned in the first post) in max gives a good result when rendered from there. Wouldn't it be interesting to look to the same workaround as in 3ds max to get fringe free renderings?
Just to mention, I don't fully understand why the workaround in max doesn't give fringing. So additionally, if anybody would care to explain further on this? I realize it's a common workaround, from what I have read.
For reference, here is the max workaround described in two images:

Click image for larger version Name:	map2.jpg Views:	0 Size:	60.1 KB ID:	1192630

And Buck feel free to elaborate on the black with alpha thing you mentioned. Are you then talking about creating mattes per object?

            Hi chromaloma,

I believe a similar setup in Vantage can be achieved by going in the Background rollout and select Solid color from the dropdown menu and uncheck Use for refraction/mirror reflections: https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1f6bL...bWoV6i8HoeBkES This way it should render with a black background like in Max with proper lighting and reflections/refractions. You can try it on your end but I believe this way it would result in a black fringe instead of a bright fringe.

            Best regards,
            Alexander
