  • Enable Dynamic Textures == off - reflections not rendering correctly

    Hi,
I noticed when I toggle Enable Dynamic Textures == off, materials are not reflecting world objects, this is also true for the outputted render not just live view. Using the new view mode you can easily see the issue. Attaching images.
    Thanks

Left image with toggle on you can clearly see reflections, on the right with off it's only reflecting GI I think

I'm not sure if there is a issue here - but the difference in reflections is very different withDynamic Textures on and I am not sure which one is more physically accurate - if you could confirm that would be great.

When this setting is disabled the renderer should always load the textures at full resolution. So there should still be reflections. Maybe there wasn't enough video memory to load the full textures. Check for errors in Help->Open debug log.

Defintely no errors and no issue with memory here on a 4090, scene only using 4-6gb of VRAM. Changing the glossiness on the material has no affect either. But the difference is extremely clear in the screenshot provided. When toggled on or off.
        Thanks

I beleive the problem is material reflection glossiness is not taken into consideration when Enable Dynamic Textures == off, you can test this yourself. It seems to be stuck at a value and changing it has no effect.

Hm, ok. Can you try toggling bump and normal mapping on and off to see if it has the same effect? Fine bump detail could change the reflection when the resolution of the bump map changes. Also if you could send us a sample scene to reproduce the issue, create a ticket here with a link to this thread https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Ahh - yes it looks like the normal map is causing the issue... If i toggle off then the relfection glossiness works as intended. Thanks - I guess this is not an issue then and I need to look at the normal map?

                Hi rita_sobal,

If the texture map used has a lot of small(high frequency) contrasting the dynamic textures can blur them out and cause such drastic visual discrepancies (either in normal/bump or glossiness). I would suggest to have dynamic textures off if you have enough memory available. If you send us the scene as Nikola suggested we would take a look at it and try to minimize the differences.

                Best regards,
                Alexander

Hi Alexander - I managed to fix it myself. You are right the original normal texture had too much detail for such small tiles. I managed to create a new one using Materialize and now it works perfectly. You can see what I changed it from and to attached.

                  Thanks for the help.

Yes, dynamic textures on/off can give very different result when you have fine bump/normal maps.
Results should be closer to the V-Ray CPU renders when dynamic textures are ON.
