  • Vantage 2.5 worked but now does not start anymore.

*12/07/2024 edit: Fixed in version 2.5.1

    Hello!

So I have been witnessing the awesome VR power of Vantage, through a 3DS Max livelink, for a brief 15 minutes. After that I wanted to try it with another scene, and Vantage crashed. I assumed because it was a rather heavy file.
After that crash I was still able to open another file, but now I'm getting a crash at every startup, even without a livelink.
I see the splash screen come up, then see a message about a minidmp. (I attached an example.) Behavior seems similar between starting from a 3ds max livelink and a normal startup.

I uninstalled Vantage through add/remove programs, and reinstalled it, but it did not help. It is a bit late here and I'm sleepy, so I probably have about 100 options left to explore, but any quick pointers are appreciated.

    I'm on Nvidia 556.12 Game Ready and Win11 23H2

    Thanks!

My guess is that your vantage.ini file now contains a preference that crashes Vantage on startup.
You can regenerate the file by going to %appdata%/Chaos/Vantage and then renaming vantage.ini to vantage.ini.bak.
This will cause all your Vantage preferences to be lost however.
If this fixes the issue, please send us vantage.ini.bak for debugging.

Curious, I thought the same thing, so last night I did take a look at the ini, but did not yet rename it. Tried it just now.
After starting Vantage again, there is a similar crash as before. Also after an F5 on this explorer window below, it does not seem to have generated a new .ini so maybe this crash takes please before that event can be triggered? Curious stuff.

Edit: I also have a similar path called "Chaos Group" instead of just "Chaos" it contains similar files too, I did the same trick there but no luck.

We moved the default location from "Chaos Group" to "Chaos".

What are the contents of debug_log.txt after the crash? Is it only 3 lines?

Roger, ok so that was the right place. This is the contents of the debug_log.txt:

This seems to be the same as another startup crash reported today in another thread. It is related to the new VR feature. Can you tell us what VR hardware you have and what VR-related software is running when the crash occurs? And what was running or what was different when the crash was not occurring initially?

The crash that the other client is having (probably identical) is in vrclient_x64.dll, part of SteamVR. Maybe you can try poking at Steam to return it to the working state? If you succeed please do tell us what worked

Excellent progress! I kind of suspected it might have been the VR stuff. So I shut that all down yesterday evening. My default is to close any program not in use.
Last night I used both SteamVR and Meta Quest Link and switched setting OpenXR Runtime on both.
All my attempts at starting Vantage from that point forward where without any VR software running in the background.
I just started Quest Meta Link and set it to handle the OpenXR runtime. Started Vantage: Works!
Closed Vantage, Shut down Quest Meta Link, Started Vantage (livelink with 3ds and normally): still works!
So I assume it is something around that area. Maybe it is a setting that after an abnormal shutdown of VR software or hardware, does not return to default and expects something to be active, if it is not: crash? Now that it was closed correctly the state is normal/closed and it works again? (As you can tell debugging is not my life. )

I suspect it is SteamVR that is the culprit for me.

Order of things I tried in the last 3 minutes:

                  Started SteamVR,
                  set openxr handling
                  Started Vantage: minidmp crash
                  Closed SteamVR,
                  started Quest Meta Link
                  Set Openxc handling
                  Started Vantage: success

I'm using pico vr, but it still doesn't work according to your steps.

We think we've found the problem and we plan to release a hotfix next week.

Very cool! For me it works at the moment, either by using Meta Quest Link or Virtual Desktop (The latter does use SteamVR and somehow seems to function fine.) I'm not sure how much performance drop that extra step is causing. Want to play with settings etc a bit tomorrow.
Thank you very much for the quick support and actions!

lin_mobai I know the virtual desktop app is available for the Pico as well, so if you are in a pinch you could give that a try (No idea if it would resolve your issue, I'm not tech support just a user) Maybe better to await the hotfix.

                          Hi guys,

We have released Vantage 2.5.1 which addresses the crash with the SteamVR. Can you please try it and say if it works for you?

                          Best regards,

                              Fixed!
Repeated the steps I did earlier in this post that resulted in the crash, then installed 2.5.1 and did the same steps: no crash.
                              Great work, thank you!!
