  • Acescg and .exr problem

    Hello,

We were able to properly render the scene in Acescg and save .png/.jpg files properly, but the .exr file is getting saved with incorrect settings. Can some on quickly check this ?

Also it would be very helpful to give options to save .png in 16bit ( i dont know why this is not standard already), I think this should me made available immediately as current Vantage saves .png only in 8 bit format and it takes time to first save in .exr and then covert it.

    Thank You

We do not bake post processing in EXR files. In this case you get the raw (denoised) result. I think this is the difference you're seeing and not that ACES isn't working. Post processing clamps the color values and makes the high dynamic range pointless. It would have been the same with 16 bit png.

      Hello,
Can you let us know the correct workflow for .exr when using vantage, if we open .exr in PS or frame buffer how to do we make it look exactly same as in the Vantage viewport, earlier when we were using gamma 2.2 we dint have an issue.
      Thanks for your quick reply.

What I described about EXR has been like that from the start. What do you mean you didn't have this issue earlier - were you using EXR? Maybe post some images to illustrate your issue.

Is there any documentation about the recent support for the ACEScg workflow in Vantage 2.5? If not, can you please post a short description of the intended workflow?

            Hi cole_maes,

The current workflow is the following: if you are working in the ACEScg color space in your DCC(for example Max https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAX/...Workflow+Setup or Maya https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAYA...Workflow+Setup) and export the VRScene or Live link - Vantage will render it properly. However it will not display it as you would expect like in the VFB as there is no OCIO config support just yet, we will add it in a later release. If you would render out an EXR and open it in, for example Nuke and load an OCIO config - the results between the VFB and Nuke should be pretty similar.

            Best regards,
            Alexander

as a stopgap solution you can probably use highlight compression (Reinhard tonemapper) with a 3d lut (you can create one in Fusion or Nuke) to display ACEScg correctly in Vantage.
this was working a few versions ago.

                  Hello.
                  Thanks for inputs.

I still strongly feel that 16 bit options to save .png or .tif files should be available. It saves time to go via the .exr route sometimes. Also what I am asking is avaible since ages and its just a matter of implementation, why cant we have all options to save a .png or .tif files as we have in PS ? any file format should have all available options associated with it or what it is capable of doing.

I would appreciate it if this is implemented asap. Thanks.

I have attached a jpeg save from a 32bit .exr from vantage. you can clearly see banding here. Physical sky and fog.
