  • Animated tree nightmere

I know this is a new feature, but Vantage has so many quirks that it is hard to trust when you need it most.
The issue for me now is that I have a scene in 3D Max. Since Vantage struggles with animated people (Anima), I have been recommended to use a live link from 3D Max. This creates other issues, but ... back to this point.
Now, I would like to have some animated trees, but if you place them inside 3D Max from Cosmos, they don't work in vantage.
If you place them inside Vantage during the live link, they all go to 0,0,0 coordinate, and you can't move them. They don't even show on the Vantage lister.

If you create an empty Vantage scene, then add some trees, they move, but if you try to load those trees as 'Config only file' to the live link scene, they do not load.

So the only way to use moving trees is exporting the 3D Max scene and VRay scene, and then load them into an empty Vantage file, but then I can't use the Anima people.

I am using the latest version 5.2.1, and 3D Max 2024.2.1

Besides you can't use the render queue when you are live link, so. I am lost on the usability of this workflow.
    Any help is appreciated.

The live link workflow requires and expects the scene contents to be created in the host application. The problem is that Max does not yet add the necessary metadata to the Cosmos objects so that Vantage can detect that it needs to enable wind animation for these objects. We've already requested this and it will be added to a future build of V-Ray for 3ds Max.

Thank you for the answer, but what is the workflow for using these moving trees?
      Export everything to Vantage?

I don't quite understand the question. The workflow shouldn't be different from other Cosmos assets (when the metadata issue gets resolved). You just have to click the checkbox in the Wind rollout to enable the wind for vegetation (you may not want it because it constantly changes the scene in interactive mode and doesn't let the noise clean up).

          These are the issues:

I have a 3D max scene; I open the live link with Vantage, and I add moving trees inside Vantage; I can't see the tree; I only see the Gismo. I save the Vantage scene. I re-open the scene (not live link anymore) then I can see the tree.

I have a 3D Max scene; I open a live link section, and I try to load a previously created Vantage scene with moving trees into my live link 3D Max scene (Same as I do to load exposure settings or cameras). The previously created moving trees are not visible. Latest Vantage and 3D Max 2024 latest update. Latest V-Ray and Chaos library.

V-Ray for Max has been updated to add the metadata I mentioned previously. It should be available in the next stable build here, tomorrow: https://nightlies.chaos.com/#/vrayma...ble/stable_6.2 (the one after 20240728 ). With this build you should be able to import animated trees from Cosmos in Max and they should be animated in Vantage when you check "Affect vegetation".

I don't think we really support adding scene data (actual objects) to a live link session through .vantage files, even though it may partially work. "Open as config only" can be used to load render settings, like number of bounces, post effects, etc.
