  • Chaos Vantage freeze Windows 10 completely

After a moment working with the software, it starts to think (the mouse cursor starts spinning) and after a few moments, it completely hard freeze windows. The only way to recover the freeze it's energy reset the pc. This is happening with this PC configuration:

    Ryzen 5950x
    RTX 3080 10GB
    Windows 10

Have working and playing with multiple GPU intensive programs for hours(Alan Wake Remastered, Alan Wake 2, D5 Render and Twinmotion), no one of this softwares present any kind of problem.

Can somebody help me? I have an active license.

    VANTAGE VERSION 2.5.1

    3DS MAX VERSION 2024

    DRIVER VERSION 560.81

Just to make sure it isn't a hardware problem: download BenchMate and do all tests 3-4 times (CPU as GPU). Especially keep an eye on CB15(xtreme) and Y-Cruncher. All tests should not crash!

Does this happen if you start with "New scene" or only when you load a specific scene?

Even if the GPU crashes, Windows should reset the driver after a few seconds. Check the registry keys in
      Code:
      Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
      - make sure that the value for TdrLevel is 3 and the value for TdrDelay is some small number. If the keys are not set (missing) this is also ok - the default values would be used.

        Hi!

Thanks for the suggestion. Already run the tests, but not able to replicate the same freeze.

Yes, it seems so if we can trust the documentation. Just in case, you could decrease the value of TdrDelay and TdrDdiDelay to 5 seconds.

Updated the TDRDELAY and TDRDDIDELAY to 5 seconds and crash again with one of the templates, but it let me open the task manager and kill the Chaos Vantage process before the windows crash. Let me replicate the problem again but go all the way.

UPDATE: Let the crash develop, Windows its not freezed but CHAOS VANTAGE it's totally freeze. I think this almost discard a hardware problem no?

OK, so at least you don't have to reboot the whole computer now. I wasn't expecting this change to fix the issue, just to make it easier to recover (and to confirm it's a driver hang). Have you used Vantage successfully in the past or is this your first attempt? Can you share this log file:
                Code:
                %APPDATA%/Chaos/Vantage/debug_log.txt

I tested the first versions but a very long time ago on this pc. Like 2 year I think, but was only for testing, never used it for longs periods of time. This recent version it's giving me problems since the first install.

If this is the log saved after a crash, I don't see any errors or other suspicious lines in the log. The application worked for 20 minutes and the log ends after the material preview was generated. Does it always hang/crash when you go to the materials tab or does it crash randomly?

Yeah, this is the log. No, it randomly crash, sometimes it's only clicking on something. It's like the program it's working like a charm an then makes a pause and hangs randomly.

OK. I don't know what may be causing this. It could be a hardware stability issue, so you should probably run some tests as suggested above. You could try FurMark to stress the GPU. It should be able to run for at least 10 minutes.

Same thing, no crash. I don't know what is causing these vantage freezings, but I can't use vantage, one of the reasons I paid for the licence. The only software I have trouble it's these, no problem with D5 render or Twinmotion.

I don't know either You could try downloading older versions, see if some of them works. Just check the "Show all versions" box here: https://download.chaos.com/?platform=47&product=63

Another thing we could try is to create a dump file, though there is no guarantee it will help us debug the issue, but it's possible. You'll have to go to Task Manager while the app is frozen, right click on vantage.exe and select "Create dump file". This will create a very large file in your temp folder. You can then archive it and send it to us through a file sharing service. When I tried this with the sample scene from your screenshot it created a >7GB file which compressed to ~1.2GB. If you use a smaller scene it would create a smaller file - it just dumps all the memory there.
