  • Displacement

    Hi,

I'm struggling to get the displacement from Cinema 4D Vray 7 working in Vantage. I've been googling and searching the forum but I'm not sure if it even works. Is this supported? Is there a way to display the displacement the same as in Cinema?

In the previous thread I advised you to try and set the displacement tessellation level to "None".

Did you change it back ? It's a global preference affecting all future scene loads.

      Hi Vladimir,

The reason that I ask is that I didn't see the rooftile displacement in the example file I sent you. The path in the front has displacement as well that both don't show in the video you sent me. I presume you have the tesselation set to none as well?

Oh, that video was probably sent by Tashko from our support.
        I will ask him.

Yes, indeed, the displacement/tessellation is calculated but not actually visible on the surface/objects. Will check the material/shading network from the C4D file and see if this is something unsupported or a bug at our side.
Will post here when have any results.

After a quick investigation we found that the Displacement Shift when is different from 0, doesn't load in Vantage correctly. Its considered as a bug and our dev team will look into it.

Now to get it working you can set the Shift to 0 and I see that the Displacement type is also set to 2d for this material. This requires to also adjust Preferences > Render Defaults > Emulate 2D Displacement in Vantage
Or just use the Normal displacement inside C4D.

So I've tried one or to things. Normal displacement inside C4D, and emulate 2D Displacement turned off in Vantage (as I now use Normal displacement. There's a bit of displacement but not the right mapping. In C4D the mapping is set to UVW. Before any further investigation I wonder if you guys can fix this or that I'm waisting time because of a bug.

I'm not sure if this is related but our displacement implementation currently only supports the primary mapping channel. If the scene exported from Cinema uses an additional UV channel for displacement it won't work.

Just want to know how to implement displacement correctly from Cinema to Vantage and what would be the proper way to do it. If it's not possible it would be a major dissapointment. Why does it have to be so complicated? Would be great to see an example file from let's say the rooftiles as we use those a lot. At the moment I'm still confused wheater it works or not.
