  • Questions About Online License

    Hello,

I am currently using a dongle. I am reading about the new licensing system and feel confused.

I read on this thread that https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...-to-the-dongle
it is not possible to switch back to dongle once we transfer our license to online license.

On the other hand, on vray documentary (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/LIC5/License+Setup) is is written that :
License Server version 5.0......................... It is still compatible with existing USB dongles, in case you need to use your licenses in this way."
    So I have some questions:
    1. Will my dongle license expire in the newer versions of vray?
    2. If I switch to online license, is it possible to use dongle when I need?
    3. Do we have to transfer our licenses from dongle?

    Thanks in advance.

The dongle is just a carrier, on which licenses are uploaded. It does not expire if there are no licenses.

    1. Will my dongle license expire in the newer versions of V-Ray? - The rental licenses are valid for a certain period of time (e.g. a month or a year). They will work for all new V-Ray versions released during the time the license is valid.
If your license is perpetual (no expiration date) - it's valid for all minor upgrades, but not for the major ones. For example - a V-Ray 3 license will work for all versions between 3.0 and 3.6, but will not work for V-Ray NEXT.

    2. If I switch to online license, is it possible to use dongle when I need? - No, once you do that the dongle will no more be functional - you can get rid of it.

    3. Do we have to transfer our licenses from dongle? You don't have to, at least for now. We're planning to phase the dongles out at some point, however, since it's an older technology and not compatible with some infrastructures - like Virtual Machines, USB C etc.
What's bothering you about the Online licensing option?

Then I will transfer my license from dongle today.

How long does it usually take to transfer?

If your dongle is eligible - usually takes a couple of minutes. See https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...icenses+Online for more information.

I don't want to create a new threat because my question is closely related to this one.
What happens if because of constructions we won't have internet in the office for some time and thus can't connect to the online server.
Is there any way to contact you guys to transfer the license from online back to dongle?
          Cheers,
          Oliver

You can borrow the license for offline usage - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...or+Offline+Use
It'll expire in 2 weeks, but hopefully, your internet will be back by that time. If not - you can manually re-borrow it - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...rnetconnection
