  • Vray on home CPU vs. laptop - is "borrowing" required?

I run Vray on my desktop mac and on my mac laptop. I will be away from home for a few weeks and need to continue rendering on the laptop. When my desktop cpu is off, I can't render on the laptop. Do I have to "borrow" the license or can I just make the laptop the license server?

    Hello,

Can you please confirm that you have installed the Chaos License server on your Mac laptop? You can download the latest Chaos License server from the following page:

    https://download.chaosgroup.com/down...dalone-522-adv

If you have already installed the Chaos License server, please go to the localhost page (localhost:30304) and make sure that your Online licensing is enabled.
You need to borrow your licenses for offline use only if you plan on using V-Ray without an internet connection.

Please send screenshots from your localhost page and the full name of the V-Ray installer to support@chaosgroup.com, if your issue continues.

Nikolay, so what you're sying is, if you're online, you can install in 20 machines at 5 differnt locations if you want and you can at any time use any of those computers without changing anything, as long as you only use one of those at any 1 time?
      Kind Regards,

Yes, if you use the licenses online they are synced at the backend, so you can share licenses between different license server installations. If you borrow them on a license server instance the licenses can be obtained only from it (similar to a dongle).

I have the latest License server installed on my laptop, and it states that node and interface are available. But when I attempt to render I get a message stating that the License could not be contacted. This was working fine before the Next update 1; I was able to render with Vray when away from home.

Uninstalled/reinstalled everything (Maya 2018, Vray, License server) and it appears to be working now (on its own). Only problem now is Maya 2018 freezes on quit every time, even after resetting Maya prefs.

Just to be clear, I have a laptop at home I would like to use V-Ray Next on. So do I install the license server on my home laptop and sign in? It will then use one of the licenses that's not in use at the office?

                Yes, that's correct.

Can you check if it still hangs on exit even with V-Ray uninstalled (or when V-Ray is not loaded?)
It would also be worth checking to see if it eventually exits if you wait long enough.
