  • Using VRay on Laptop (when away from home-office and PC is turned off)

I have my main pc at home (i9-7980xe) with a dongle in for VRay and of course that has all been working fine for years.

I recently purchased a laptop for me to use whilst away from home to work on small projects.

The dongle etc will remain on the i9 pc at home (dongle is inside the case, I don't ever touch or take it out and don't want to start doing that).

I've installed 3DS Max and V-Ray onto my Laptop, installed the License Server on the laptop too and it says (as seen below) "No Licences Available".

When I start 3DS Max, in the Render Setup Dialog box it has a "Could not obtain licence (-197)".

When I click on "Edit/Set License Server Information" and put into the "Online Authorisation Settings" (User name and Password) - I get an error dialog box saying "Could not save settings".

I just want to be able to use V-Ray on whichever machine I want (I'm a single user, one PC, one Laptop), without playing around with licencing settings, or opening up cases to take out and carry dongles with me).

I also want to be able to keep on working on whatever machine without worrying about licenses being 'unobtainable' due to no internet connection.

    Is this possible ?

If so, please could you tell me what I need to do.

    Many thanks.

Okay, so basically, I've read up more about all of this, and it seems that I need to Transfer my Dongle License to Online Licensing ?

My *ONLY* concern now is, what happens if/when I want to use VRay and the online system is down (for whatever reason) ? Is VRay unusable in such situations ?

You can borrow a license for up to two weeks, I think. So, when you go away and you might not have internet, you borrow. I got rid of my dongle a long time ago and I don' t miss it. The license server has been down a few times, once causing me to miss a deadline, but other than that, it has been okay.

        Thanks Bobby.

Chaos, I'm very uncomfortable transferring my dongle to online - I'd be relinquishing something which works perfectly (for me) to a system which may sometimes be down (broken internet connection) and under those circumstances I could miss deadlines (which would be unacceptable - some of my clients have extremely tight deadlines, i.e. pitch presentations, which would be disastrous, and a first, were I to not-deliver).

Are there ANY plans to allow Dongle Users the ability to Lend (Borrow) Licenses ?

I guess the only other alternative is that I take my dongle with me to sites ?

Google has a nifty security key that I love. My keychain has a Bluetooth dongle, which allows me to log into my Google account securely anywhere.

Thank you for your opinion on Online licensing. You are right that Online licensing depends on too many factors like internet, servers e.t.c., that is why we have the option to switch your online-based license to offline based.
You can borrow your license for a period of 14 days, and even make it auto-renew itself every 14 days, as long as you are connected to the internet.
More information regarding offline licensing can be found in the below link:
            https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...or+Offline+Use

We are working on optimizing in the near future, the licensing process with an e-mail notification of the expiring licenses and also the borrowed for offline licenses too.

If you need further assistance or any hesitation regarding the transfer of your dongle to online-based, please write to us at e-mail: support@chaosgroup.com and we will help you.
