  • Upgrade from MODO 10 to 13 V-Ray issues

    Hello there,

I was using MODO version 9 or 10 on and off when I first purchased V-Ray for MODO upon its initial release. Version 3.6 was the last upgrade I installed back in 2017/18, if I recall correctly, but I dropped MODO completely soon after as I was in the process of switching over full time to Solidworks. However, The Foundry recently made me a MODO offer I couldn't refuse on an upgrade from v10 to the latest v13 and It's certainly rekindled my interest in this great software package and V-Ray.

The point of the preamble is that, naturally, I would like to reinstall V-Ray to replace the MODO stock renderer but I'm finding it difficult to do so as I'm confused by the licensing and compatibility arrangments. It seems V-Ray Next has superseded V-Ray 3. But while version 3.60.01 is still available online it claims compatibility only with versions up to MODO v12, leaving an uncomfortable gap to v13. Yet V-Ray Next claims to be compatible with all versions of MODO going back through 13, 12, 11, 10, to 901 and 902. So how can I use V-Ray in MODO v13 while taking into account my existing V-Ray license? I imagine you will recommend I upgrade from my 3.6 license to V-Ray Next, but that just isn't an option in the foreseeable future. What happens in such cases?

You should have access to 3.7 nightlies that work with Modo 13
If you don't have access to these you should Email support about it
the nightly builds should be here

No one recommends or forces upgrading here, some people are still on 3.6.. it is not an issue

Thanks for responding so quickly, Muhammed, and with a good solution. I found the nightlies and installed 3.7 with "Initial support for Modo 13", as you suggested. A test render on a relatively complex scene on default settings is looking pretty good right off the bat, and much quicker than the standard renderer, too. An impressive start.

I understand, but it looked for a time as though I'd fallen between two stools and wasn't going to be able to use V-Ray at all.
