V-Ray and base software (maya) licensing

Probably a stupid question but it's never been totally clear to me - Does V-Ray render require an available license of the base software (i.e. Maya batch) in order to render? I was under the impression that since Maya provides 5 batch render licenses for each network license you own, then you would only be able to render with 5 instances of V-Ray if you own one Maya license (provided you have 5 V-Ray licenses, of course). But is this correct, or is V-ray render not limited to the number of maya (or whatever) licenses? Thanks
