  • perpetual to subscription

As with most people, not at all a fan of the push to subscription. (i know we can technically get a 6 perpetual upgrade, but the price is pretty dissuasive.)

Of course, nothing we say will change things.. the maths will have been done, and the number of people who ditch vray will be more than offset by the increased revenue from subscriptions.. so.. pffff.

so, with that off my chest... i wanted to double check... when "upgrading" from perpetual to subscription, it says " the original perpetual license will remain active"

so, that means, if i proceed to get a vray6 subscription with the 40% off for one year offer, then, cannot or dont want to continue paying the subscription at some point, i can go back to my existing vray5 and use it as now...perpetually?

just want to be sure of this before doing anything ill regret.

I haven't read this offer because I'm not interested in Subscription, but surely the enticement is the discount and so I'd have thought you'd forfeit your perpetual, otherwise you could just enjoy the 40% off, have fun with v6 and then go back to v5 without penalty. Why would Chaos offer that?

Okay, I've just read it.... I would not interpret it as you have.

It is *migrating* your perpetual licence to subscription and if you do that, you'll get a % off for doing so.

"your original perpetual licence will remain active" to me means something along the lines of "whilst you're on subscription" (I reckon). The moment you've had enough of Subscription and cancel that, I bet your perpetual licence will be dead

      My 0.000000000000000000000002 cents worth....

        How do you infer that?
        A perpetual license is yours.
There is no legal ground for us to revoke it, and never an upgrade to a higher version invalidated a previous version's license.

Because the word migrate is used, I take that as meaning ‘move’.

So the deal is I can get 1 year’s use of v6 on subscription with a nice % discount, and then stop paying the subscription at end of year 1 and continue using perpetual version 5?

          Then why the discount?

it is normal for anyone to wonder what is the catch

              I'm learning about V-Ray Solo as it's new to me (and it might be a good option for me, a single freelancer) - during that read up I saw this about Perpetual Licences;

"If you have a perpetual license, you can continue to use it as you always have, or you can upgrade it to the latest version. You can also migrate to one of our new, annual subscription plans at a discount for the first year."

I stand by my understanding, it sounds/reads like a forfeit. Clarification really is needed imho.

You can upgrade to a perpetual license for v6, thereby owning v5 and v6, or you can migrate the mode of licensing for v6 to a discounted annual subscription, thereby owning v5 and renting v6.

ok well that seems like a good option then... i will probably jump on a 6 pro subscription, keeping 5 as a backup.

Just remember the implications, should your future circumstances dictate that you *may* want to upgrade your v5 to v7, you might be paying heftily for that *double* jump.

(I'm still going to go for v6 perpetual, though not right now as it's a bit of a big payment jump and I haven't had v5 for very long).

yeah i know, and i do hate the idea of subscription, however the deal is quite good if i can keep 5, and ive been needing phoenix a bit recently, so having all those extras in the subscription, and a 40% discount for the first year is quite tempting... assuming the sub price doesnt go up by a big chunk in the next few years, i see it being not to painful financially even if i decide later to return to perpetual for 7 or whatever (assuming 7 perpetual exists, and theres a path from 5 to 7)

in the end, needing vray and phoenix, wanting to try out scans... 40% discount... keep my 5 license forever.. im sold... might regret it later but hey ho.

Sketchup used to kill off your prior permanent version went you bought the new one in that it couldn't be installed again. As for the so called deal....they'll burn you once your on the rental scam just like Adobe and Autodesk, it's done to make more money, not to do users a favour.

We've canned plans to get more seats and will upgrade what we have to v6 perpetual whilst we learn Blender.

I just wished Chaos offered an Indie licence (as I don't earn that much from 3D these days) - I know there is Solo but even with that deal I find it hard to get my head around the fact that I'd be paying more for a renderer than I do for the host application (3DS Max Indie @ £285 per year).

Can't see an Indie VRay ever happening until the competition forces Chaos to do so (which I do understand from a business point of view). I also don't see that happening any time soon.....

Sorry, I just do not like subscription software and the way the 'little man' always get's treated by the bigger companies (yes, I know, I have to get used to it!).

My workload has dipped drastically. I was looking at monthly but really, double the cost? Seems unfair.
Also, aside from that, I don't understand why the Enterprise version is cheaper than the Pro version, given they offer the exact same package.
                              I must be misreading something...
