  • Are there any issues with going back to older license server versions?

I let windows update last night and today Vray couldn't get a license, the Vray tab in render setup was showing a "could obtain a license (-200)" warning and when I tried to render the render error log window showed "could obtain a license (-96)"

I was on license server 5.1.0 so I updated to 5.1.1 but that didn't work, I tried plugging my dongle into different ubs ports to no effect. I uninstalled the license server and went back to 5.1.0 which didn't work, so I uninstalled Vray which loaded license server version 4.5-something and that finally worked. I tried upgrading to 5.1.1 but it failed again so I just re-installed vray again and left it at 4.5x

My question is, will it cause any problems leaving it at the old software version or is it OK as long as it works?

    I'm on Windows 10 Version 1803 - OS build 17134.112
    Vray 3.60.04

You might experience issues with V-Ray Next licenses and backwards compatibility - e.g. using V-Ray 3 with a V-Ray Next license. It'll be best to write us at support@chaosgroup.com to troubleshoot this.

I think I may have guessed a source of the problem, I may have changed the license from dongle to online activation, how would I change that back to dongle activation?

I don't really understand what you mean, your license is still on a dongle. If you want to migrate it to Online licensing - see https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...icenses+Online
Otherwise - you need to have the dongle drivers installed - https://www.wibu.com/downloads-user-...uKey_for_Users

But I suppose you already have them if 4.5.1 license server works for you.
The dongle part of the license server must be enabled (Dongle->Enable from the license server menu).

If I'm using a dongle do I still need to activate the vray license online after installation because the installation of the license server keeps asking me for my user name and password even though the dongle is plugged in.

Also could you explain the Dongle>enable from license server menu please? not clear on what that means.

There is a "Skip" button on the left side of the installer window.
