  • Vray Next / Could not obtain a License (-197)

I have upgraded to Vray Next, License Server to 5.1.1 and the newest dongle drivers. Since then I get license errors about once or twice a day. (-197: There are no available licenses of this type on the ChaosGroup License Server.) Restarting the computer holding the dongle solves the error (perhaps it would be sufficient to restart the license service).
I think the licenses are reported as free when the error occurs. (I didn't check every time.)

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    g.

If you don't need the dongle for any particular reason, you can migrate it to Online licensing to eliminate an eventual problem with communication to the dongle. Yours is quite an old one and it's possible that it started malfunctioning or not communicating very well with new drivers and OS version etc.

Another reason that this error occurs, of course, is not having a free license at a certain moment.

Okay it just happened again and I can confirm that the licenses are displayed as free but several clients get the (-197) error. Restarting the VRLService helps until the error occurs again.
Only when 3ds max is closed and restarted on the client machines after restart of the VRLService, the licenses are displayed as in use.

Perhaps I should note that we have three license computers each with a dongle attached, containing one or two workstation licenses. All three license servers are entered in the Vray client license settings window on every client.
This setup worked fine for years now until the update to Vray next and License Server 5.1.1.

It's best to write us at support@chaosgroup.com for that - please include in the e-mail the dongles serial numbers and the logs from the license servers - http://127.0.0.1:30304/logs/download on each license server
