  • Vray Next / Could not obtain a License (-198)

Once again I'm was having problems with 3dsmax and decided to reboot in hopes that I can continue working only to see that I can not as 3dsmax 2018 and 2019 both think that the license is engaged and I can tell you its not as the license server is my laptop beside me and the desktop is the ONLY client on my network currently as I unplugged all others from the switch and still I can not use V-Ray, when I look at the browser license status it always says that I have nothing engaged even when I'm working on it but all of a sudden my license keeps being taken by no idea what. I saw a similar thread about this below but didn't want to hijack it.

    Hi Dave,

I really couldn't understand what happened. Which V-Ray version are you using with 3dsMax 2018 and 2019 - Next on both or V-Ray 3 on one of them? Also - which license server version are you using? This can happen if you have V-Ray Next and V-Ray 3 on the same machine and you start 2 3dsMax instances - the first one will get the license, the second - will not. Unfortunately, that's a side effect from making the Next license backwards compatible with V-Ray 3.

Currently I'm only using Next, and only one instance at a time. I have 2019 installed but not using it for production yet. I'm using license server
      License Server
      5.1.0
      (build: 51929)
and V-Ray Next 4.02.04.00001 This is also a clean install of everything on this workstation and V-Ray 3.x was not installed. I did get the license to release but only after rebooting my license server which is not something I want to do regularly.

Basically what is happening is if I shut down 3dsmax 2018 and start it back up, occasionally (its happening more and more lately) I get the error in the OP and I have to restart my workstation AND the license server to get it back working again which is taking far too much time away from my work. So far Im liking Next but for the first time ever with V-Ray, regretting updating and considering on rolling back to 3.x

I don't think that's related to the V-Ray build, sounds like a licensing problem. I'd strongly recommend upgrading the license server to 5.1.1, 5.1.0 had some problems related to dongle usage. Out of interest - have you tried only restarting the license server's service instead of rebooting?
If you don't insist on dongle licensing for some particular reason - you can transfer the licenses to Online licensing - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...icenses+Online
that will eliminate the dongle malfunctioning element.

You can also check your dongle drivers version - (Control Panel-> WibuKey->About tab). If it's not 6.40 or 6.32 - please do a clean reinstall - I've posted the procedure here - https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...-license-65533

If after all of the above you still have the same issue - it'll be best if you write us at support@chaosgroup.com - if you do that please include a license server's log - http://127.0.0.1:30304/logs/download on the computer with the dongle.
