  • Frequently sudden "Could not obtain a license (-197)" kills my workflow

    Hello everyone,

is there anything I can do? Sometimes 3DSMax2018 crashes and after the restart I get the "Could not obtain a license (-197)" error.
I usually need to reboot my workstation and re-plug the dongle.
But then I also need to reboot the rendernodes - and it really kills my workflow when I´ve opened several projects in different programms like AfterEffects, PRemiere etc.

How can I avoid losing my license? I have work to do and deadlines to meet. Can I get a "permanent" license somehow???

EDIT: Windows 10 with all updates, 3DSMax2018, Vray 3.60.03

And now I rebooted my workstation and I get "Could not obtain a license (-200)"

Please ChaosGroup tell me how you can make my software work again.
And you need to understand that not every user of Vray has a diploma in IT !!!! You should REALLY rethink your licensing philosophy!

      Hello Denis,

-200 indicates an issue with the connection to the license server, most often because the license server isn't running.

      - 197 means that there are no licenses for a specific product - can happen if a dongle connection is skipping.

Try reinstalling the license server - https://download.chaosgroup.com/license-server
If you don't insist on having a dongle, you can migrate your licenses to online licensing, thus excluding the possibility for a broken dongle or a skipping USB port. - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...icenses+Online
If you want to keep the dongle for some reason - try to do a clean dongle reinstall - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...Dongle+Drivers
You can also try another USB, I've noticed that USB ports on the back of the computer sometimes perform better for some reason.
