  • New license server (v5.1.2) service will not start after install

I'm trying to work my way through the instructions for transferring my V-Ray license from the dongle to the new license server. However, after installing the cgls_win_5.1.2.exe I'm getting the following errors. Please see the attachment. I changed my password earlier today and I double checked my login account name, so I'm pretty confident that isn't the issue. I'm running Windows 7.

    Thank you.

There may be several causes which lead to the service being stuck in “marked for deletion”.
    1. SysInternals' Process Explorer is opened. Closing it should lead to automatic removal of the service.
    2. Task Manager is opened.
    3. Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is opened. To ensure all instances are closed, run taskkill /F /IM mmc.exe.
    4. Services console is opened. This is the same as the previous point, since Services console is hosted by MMC.
    5. Event Viewer is opened. Again, this is the same as the first point.
    6. The key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\{service name} exists.
    7. Someone else is logged into the server and has one of the previously mentioned applications opened.
    8. An instance of Visual Studio used to debug the service is open.

A restart of the computer should also help if the above doesn't work.

Thanks for getting back to me, Ivan.

I went through your checklist this morning when I turned on my computer, and also noticed that VRLService was no longer listed under Services. I don't have Process Explorer, the Task Manager was closed, I ran the taskkill /F /IM mmc.exe to kill all instances of MMC, made sure Task Manager and Event Viewer were closed. tried unsuccessfully to find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\{service name} in the Registry, confirmed that no one else was logged into my computer, and made sure that Visual Studio was not running.

After all that, I reinstalled the cgls_win_5.1.2.exe and ended up with the same error as before (the pic I first sent you). I also noticed that the VRLService was back in the Services list. I tried to manually start it, but ended up with this error (see new pic)...

As it is right now, I am unable to use V-Ray at all.

Try deleting C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup\ssl and starting the service again. If that doesn't help - it'll best to write us at support@chaosgroup.com about this.

          Hi Ivan,

That did the trick! I was able to complete the transfer to the new license server. I unplugged the dongle and did a test render and can confirm that everything is now working.

          Thanks so much!!
