Could not obtain license -197, rendering still works

Hi there,

I have encountered a strange issue where during my work, all of a sudden my material previews started rendering as totally black in the material editor of 3DS Max 2019. I restarted a few times, and I finally discovered that there was a license error message in my VRay Settings dialog box, "Could not obtain a license (-197)." So it seems that VRay is not rendering the material previews.

I have gone through re-installation of the VRay Next update 1.1 and the latest VRay License server 5.2.2, numerous times, and this issue remains, following the Online registration guidelines of uninstalling the License Server, and deleting the Common Files Chaos Group folder, and reinstalling without automatically activating the license server, and then going to the localhost:30403 to set it up manually. It seems to work, but when I boot up 3ds Max, the error code -197 remains.

The strangest part about it is, I can still render just fine on Next and Next GPU. But my material preview is still completely black, and the error -197 remains.

Do I need to reinstall 3DS Max, that is the one thing I haven't tried?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
