  • [Urgent] Licence missing?

Firstly I'd like to open this with a statement saying just how much I absolutely abhor having to deal with the chaos licencing system. It's something that I've always found impossible to grasp how it works, and once we eventually do get it working (often dumb luck) we leave it well alone in the hope that nothing goes wrong. I don't understand how over the years Chaos have managed to get so wrong something that every other software package on earth can get right.

Well yesterday something did go wrong. My colleague couldn't access his vray licence. No matter what we have tried, we can't get the licence server to allocate one of the two available licences to him.

I then spotted that there is a "new" online licence thing that allows me (admin) to assign him one of our two licences. I did this. It worked - he can now use VRay.

I however cannot use VRay now because according to the licence server, there is only one licence. Not the two that were there this morning.

On my chaos account it displays me as having a licence, and him as having a licence. If I try to assign myself a licence, it asks if I want to remove it from him.

    I despair.

I tried assigning my product to my colleague, and then reassigning it back to myself. Didn't work.

I tried stopping/resetting the licence server on our local machines. Didn't work.

I tried stopping/resetting the licence server on our render servers. Didn't work.

I went away and made a cup of tea. Now it's working. Sort of.

I can only see one licence on my licence server, and my colleague can only see one on his. Previously I (as admin) could see all licences and who was using them. Now I can only see my own.

I have absolutely no idea whether this is how it is supposed to operate, or whether it will break again, or anything. Do we even need the "licence server" if it's checking for licences online? Why isn't this built into the software?

I've lost the will to check to see if our render nodes can find licences...
