  • Really odd license behavior.

We have 3 interface licenses for V-Ray Maya and 23 render node licenses, all on a dongle and we currently have 5 artists using v-ray intermittently throughout the day.

For two of the workstations, license usage is correctly shown in the license server UI but they are fighting over one interface license even though, according to the serverUI, there are two more licenses available.
For the other three workstations, license usage is not reported at all in the license server UI yet all three can render simultaneously without issue.

So my main problem is how to keep the first two workstations from fighting over one license. Not seeing proper reporting in the UI is annoying but doesn't keep people from working.

Any suggestions on how to solve or even diagnose this? License serving is a bit of a black box for me.

    Workstation Info -
Various Mac Pros running MacOS 10.10.5
    V-Ray Maya v.3.60.03
None of the workstations are running vrol.bin.

    Server Info -
Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) Running MacOS 10.12.5
    WibuKey driver v.6.0a
    Vray License server v5.0.1

    Possibly helpful info -
I experience the same trouble whether or not 'Online Licensing' is enabled.
When attempting to Transfer Licenses, I receive a red X next to two items - "WibuKey driver version is 6.00 or newer." and "Dongle is eligible for transfer."

There are a couple of things that might have gone wrong here. First - the dongle drivers are very, very old. It's best t upgrade to the latest ones - https://www.wibu.com/downloads-user-...uKey_for_Users

Second - review if the license settings on the MACs point to the correct license server IP address - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...cense+Settings

3rd - you said you have 3 interface licenses and 5 users - isn't it possible that they try to engage more than 3 licenses simultaneously? Another computers rendering are not related in this case since if you only render you need just a render license and you have more of these.

About migrating and license status you'll have to mail us at support@chaosgroup.com and state your CG username (the one you want to migrate the licenses to) and your dongle number.

      1. Updated the dongle drivers to 6.40 and restarted the license server.

      2. All machines are pointing to the correct IP

      3. Yes, that does happen from time-to-time but with the seemingly inaccurate reporting of license usage, it's hard to tell exactly what's happening.

I'm going to do some more controlled testing tonight after the artists have gone and will let you know what I turn up. Until then, do you have any suggestions on diagnosing the inaccurate reporting by the license server?

      Thanks!

Regarding troubleshooting - license servers 4.x and 5.x have an API that shows the sessions initiated to them - http://127.0.0.1:30304/sessions on the license server machine.

Thanks for the help, Ivan. With some more controlled testing, I tracked the problem to one machine that was not showing up in the license server UI even though it was able to render. We have three interface licenses and I was able to get four machines rendering. A nice bug for me, no doubt, but I think it was also confusing the license server and at times the server would only hand out two licenses. I re-installed v-ray on the problem machine, it is now reporting properly in the server UI and I haven't seen any more unexpected license errors on the other workstations.
