Render elements?

I've been experimenting with render elements trying different tutorials and programs in the hopes I could create a composite that matched what I see in the VFB. After looking through the forum it seems many people have this same problem with varying levels of success and failure. I purchased PDPlayer because I thought it would make this process easier, so far it hasn't. I've been experimenting for two days without success so I've got to ask can someone please pull back the curtain and explain which elements need to be exported and what blending method should be used on each one? I'm using a physical camera and a vray sun/sky if that matters.
