  • Workflow recommendations for big Project

So,we just got a big simulation job with a dozen or so fluid shots.
In the past, fluids were kind of like the icing on the cake for most projects and as such I didn´t have much time to do R&D and it was mostly a shoot and miss situation workflow wise, or I just implemented what I had learned doing R&D in my free time or on personal projects.

But now with this big job ahead, I wanna go about it more disciplined and I´m wondering if any of you mind sharing some insights on your workflow.

We´re gonna upgrade and get some more simulation licenses and I wanna make the best use of them.

I´m usually doing 10-20 frame sims with around 1 mill cells to test all the parameters I think might influence the look of the sim, before simming a hires simulation over night.
Reason for this is, that I can usually tell from what I can see in the viewport if the changes are going in the right direction or not, so setting everything up to sim over the farm for every setting I change would probably be more work than time saver.

But after I got some setting close to what I want, I´d then send 5 variations of that to the farm for simulation and testrendering for 50-100 frames, so I can start working on something else in the meantime.

Other than that I´m still kind of at a loss though about the best chronology to test settings and I was wondering, if any of you have found a good general workflow what to test when, or how to strip down a simiulation to its basics.
Because right now I often start changing several settings at once, kind of just hoping I hit the right one faster this way. And quite often there are just so many interdependencies, that after a while I´m completely at a loss where I should go next.

For example: When do you start messing around with scene scale or steps per frame? Do you start with getting the volume or speed of a simulation right first?
Reduce all noise or turbulence to zero when starting?

I´d love any input from you!
