  • Updating tutorials... some old tutorials are almost useless because of the way Phoenix has changed.

I would really love to follow this tutorial about emitting dust and particles from demolition...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpYJOIVSUx4

However, things have changed so much it's almost useless as a tutorial.

Is there any way we can keep the tutorials a little more fresh? or maybe get some cheat sheets about what to do with the major changes?

    Hey,

We do try to update the tutorials and keep them relevant, though there are some tutorials that still need some love. I will make a note for this one.

Is there something specific you're struggling with in this case?

I don't mean to be a pain - but, if you just watch the video, you'll see that it has multiple major splits from how Phoenix works today. I know it's a pain in the arse to go through, but... i could only follow for so long.

      Lets have a look:

0.42 we create a Phoenix simulator - but the options we have are different. We now have Liquidsim and firesmoke sim.... I guess we want fire smoke sim?

2.00 when you add your selection set, presumably you are pressing H to get the selection window up.. otherwise i'm not sure how you do it.

2.18 - right, so in your emitter we have "if not solid" = brush... but on mine we have "emit mode" and surface force with an outgoing velocity.... I see that one of the options is volume brush - do we select that, or leave it at the default? I'm not sure what to do and so from this point on the tutorial just becomes a frustrating guessing game.

3.24 "lets check velocity so we make sure we have that information..." sadly that button is not presented in the same way and I don't know what to press. Would that be "motion velocity"?

4.24 - changing the preview settings... I can't chnage the temperature setting like in the video....in fact everything here is unrecognisable.

Well if you would like to emit smoke you will create a Fire/Smoke simulator and if you would like Liquid choose the liquid one.

Yes, you can press "H" and pick a few nodes.

For the emission modes - you can find more info on what each does here - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...Source-General
In this case the Surface Force should be good - it will emit the fluid from the surface of the emitter object.

The velocity checkbox is now renamed Motion velocity so that people won't confuse it with the velocity channel. You can find more about it here - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ource-Emission

For the preview if you disable the Auto range checkbox in the Preview rollout you should be able to set it like in the video.

In order to get similar results in the video, the workflow should be the following:

        Create a Fire/Smoke simulator.

Create a Fire/Smoke source and add your geo.

If you wish to emit the smoke only from the surface of the geo, use Surface Force mode.

If you wish to emit only smoke - turn off the Temperature checkbox in the Fire Source or set the Temperature to 300.

Turn on the checkboxes for Particles and Motion Velocity.

        Simulate.

Create a Particle shader and pick the Simulator from it - this will allow you to use the Drag particles for rendering.

Set the Particle shader's render mode to Points.

From this point you can adjust the color and opacity of your smoke through the simulator's settings and adjust the particle look from the Particle Shader.

        Hope this helps!

        Cheers,

Thanks very much for your prompt response ... as it happens - my client wants 4 colours of smoke, so I am wanting to combine this with the other tutorial

          https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...+RGB+Workflows

Do you think that will work?

The only thing you need to watch out for would be that Drag particles don't have RGB yet - they can be one single color with the latest Phoenix. The smoke can be as colorful as you like though
