  • Backburner resume from last frame - after crash

I had a sim running for a day and a half, I realised that it had crashed twice for some reason (the pipe has ended). After it fails it starts again overwriting the first frames. It would be better if it simply resumed from when it crashed.

After I realised, I stopped the sim and started it from the last complete frame. Can I assume that there won't be any artefacts caused when the sim wasn't calculated sequentially?

    Hey,

If it has crashed, it should have created a crash dump file. It is very important to fix any crashes so you and anyone else won't have to ever deal with such a problem again. The crash dumps are usually created in C:\Users\.....\AppData\Local\Temp - you just need to see if the timestamp corresponds to the time you got the crash. We would also need the build ID of the Phoenix you are using - it's in the Phoenix About box.

Unfortunately restarting the job is what Backburner does if it fails for any reason. Wasn't there a setting you can change in Backburner for this?

If the sim is a fire/smoke simulation, it should look okay in animation without any jumps or artifacts. Unfortunately if it's a liquid sim, it might not - you better check the timestamps on the cache files and restore from the first interruption, instead of restoring from the last simulated cache.

    Cheers!

Sorry I've done a fair bit today since the crashes - I'll get the log next time. Guess I'll re-sim tonight. Thanks for the reply.
