  • Problem with infinite ocean not working

I am having an issue with the infinite ocean in Phoenix. The ocean mesh stopped previewing in the viewport and now is no longer created in the foreground of the shot. It still appears in the distance... The is no clipping on the camera and environment ranges are default

    Thanks

Hey, check your Phoenix log file for errors. You can open it from the Phoenix preferences dialogue.

    Cheers!

Sorry, this was my fault. I have quite a lot of motion blur on this shot and turns out I needed to increase the margin of the ocean mesh to stop the clipping. I had to increase to 40% which seems high, but its working.

Ahhh, yes, this explains it, the entire ocean has gotten washed away to the side outside the screen. Good catch!

Reading the docs, it sounds like the margin parameter is resolution dependant. Does this mean that if my margin number at 3k is 40% that it will still need to be 40% at 6k? obviously, with motion blur and displacement I really want to optimise this scene as much as possible

          Thanks

            Hey,

The margin is a % of the render image width/height, so it's not resolution dependent. The ocean surface poly count IS resolution-dependent though - each pixel will create one or more polys (they will be more if you have more than 1 ocean subdivs).

So the size and shape of the mesh with off-screen margin will be the same on different resolutions, but the poly count will differ.

            Hope this helps!
