  • Rain + Louver simulation?

    Hi guys,
    Let me start by saying that I am not a Phoenix user, so please help me understand if what I want to do is a good idea or not.
    I am working on a louver detail for a project,see attached render. That louver was leaking water in real life, so we had to modify the detail and fix the issue.
    Is it possible to simulate accurate rain in Phoenix and see if the water would go in the other part of the louver, test if it will leak or not in the building? Are you aware of other fluid simulation software that would do in my case?

    Hey,

    Liquid simulation in Phoenix would be limited to the grid resolution - if the geometry has gaps smaller than one voxel, would would not be able to catch them without increasing the resolution, and increasing the grid resolution ultimately ends up when you run out of RAM.

      Thanks for the reply Svetlin. What is the typical voxel dimension when you work in Phoenix? Talking about a grid 1x1x1cm? mm maybe? My louver model has real life units. For example, that steel structure holding it on the back is 6" wide. I am not sure if the gaps between layers in the louver are big enough or small enough to be ignored by for the voxel grid you mentioned.

        So if the object is 15 cm wide, and each grid voxel is 1mm wide, this makes 150 voxels - if the sim is a box and the other sides are 10cm each, this makes for 150x100x100 voxels, and a total of 1'500'000 voxels which is a pretty low resolution. Usually on a PC with 32 gigs of ram you should be able to push the resolution up to around 100 million or so. So this setup sounds like it would work, but keep in mind that it's not really a common use case, so you should take it with a grain of salt. If you are wondering about the results, grab a Phoenix trial build and see how it feels for this setup - the trial is fully functional, it just expires after 30 days.
