  • Phoenix Ocean Texture preview (per video)

    Hey there,
I am working on a small ocean sim and was wondering is there a way to preview on a mesh the way the ocean texture will be seen (prior to sim), similar to how to video from Chaos shows at this time stamp.

    https://youtu.be/6s_gozLTnZU?t=221

Currently I tweak, sim, render, tweak, sim, render and on our slow machine it is quite the chore. If this is the way it is then all good, but just hoping there was some cool little preview trick I don't know about.

    Thanks heaps

Hey, look up Pure Ocean mode - maybe this is what you need

hmm I must be doing something wrong. I have my sim setup, I have a wave force in my scene and the Ocean Texture is connected to that, I have my settings sorted out in the texture, the texture is applied to the grid - I can confirm all that as when I start to sim the waves start.

Using the pure ocean, I end up with a flat mesh that doesn't move.

Preview - Show Mesh is ticked
      Rendering - Cap Mesh
      Pure Ocean is ticked.

When I scrub the timeline nothing happens - is there something else I am missing with this or does it not work when there is a wave force in the mix?

      I am on v4

      Thanks.

        Hey,

Everything sounds correct indeed. If you follow this step by step setup, would it still produce different results? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRI2fn8lVjs

Oh, btw, forgot to ask - are you using Max or Maya? In Maya, there are sometimes issues where the ocean mesh does not update when you scroll the timeline, but if you are just getting a flat mesh, it sounds like a different thing.

        Cheers!

I didn't realise I needed to apply the displacement. Because I didn't do that for the sim, I didn't have that in place for Pure Ocean, works now.
