  • What am I doing wrong with cascading - 3ds Max

    Hey there,

I have two grids setup. The second grid has the first grid as its cascader. I have only Z jammed so the X and Y are open.

I have run the first sim, then run the second sim and as you can see from the image the particles will not flow into the second grid. You can also see there is ample overlap so I am not sure what I have messed up here.

You need to set the bottom of the source to open and the top of the cascader to open, then all others closed.

I would suggest that as there is already (in reality) water in the bottom one, sim the bottom one first for the frame range with an initial fill and not much else, so it settles
and you're not adding load more particles, then do the source emitter for the range, then resim the bottom one to accept the flow.

EDIT: You also need to set the output cache path of each sim to a separate folder

Just chiming in - setting the outputs to separate folders should not be needed in the general case, as the cache files by default are named after the Simulator that made them, so by having two sims in one scene, it should be fine...

Ah ok, I thought in my post it was advised to separate them. I must have mis-read this. I though that if in the same folder then one was overwriting the other and hadn't thought to check the cache frame names. Thanks for that update.

Ah, it must have been something else - here is more info on what the path $(...) macros do: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...Output-General - by default $(scene_path) unrolls to $(dir)\$(scene)_Phoenix_frames\$(nodename)_####.au r, so given the node names are different, it should be okay. You could have nodes with the same names in Max, unfortunately, and this is when all hell could break loose, but I just sincerely hope no one names their source the same way as their simulator for example

I'll check what is open and closed. In relation to the files.. I bung them in the same folder.. I named my emitters as WF_top and WF_bottom and keep the files the same so all is consistent.
