  • Render foam particles as geometry

    Hi Guys
I have created a boat wake using Phoenix FD. This generates foam particles, which look great. I am rendering this in red shift, so I need the foam particles to be geometry to render. How can I turn these into geometry. Cheers

    Hey,

I don't know the redshift tools well, but if this was V-Ray, I'd instance spheres over the particles using V-Ray Instancer. If this is 3ds Max, Redshift should be able to access any particles by any plugin without worries - in the case of foam, you should pick the foam particle system node of Phoenix.

    Cheers!

Hi Svetlin. Thanks for your reply. Is there a way to instance spheres without owning a copy of V-ray. Unfortunately buying a copy of V-ray isn't an option.

I just used this as an analogue. Isn't there a particle instancer in Redshift?

Hi Svelin. Thanks for your reply. Done some research Redshift doesn't have a particle instancer, but: In Houdini there is an instancer that can be used. Nparticle can be used in Maya and in 3ds max tyflow can be used also, which is what I have used. Seems to be working OK

Oh, awesome, indeed tyflow should be able to do that too!

              Hi there,
I have the exact same problem. Tyflow can instance spheres on the particles but it doesn't take in account the size channel from Phoenix for example. Also it is really slow on large number of particles and it is very unstable.
Secondly, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't replicate the quality of Phoenix's native Foam shader.

If only other renderers would be allowed to have access to that shader that would be so so nice.

Oh, they do have access since early 2020. Now Corona renders Phoenix's particle shaders. It's a matter of time and initiative I guess...

                  Hey Svetlin! Thanks for replying.

Ha... I either misunderstood what they were saying on RS forums or I read an older post, but this is great news.

Yes, Corona can render the Phoenix shader very very nicely. I have no complaints there at all. I am leaning towards Vray Gpu but I get NaN pixels or something from the foam and I've sent the scene to support. Hopefully a fix will come soon.

Oh, nice, will check it! If there is anything to fix, gotta fix it.

And if you are on forums of other renderers, please let them know there is demand

                    Cheers!
