  • Motion Blur Settings for VRay Proxy of Phoenix Liquid Sim

I might not be understanding the moblur settings or maybe there is another issue. Saved my fluid as Maya Mesh, included velocity in V Color Set, exported as .ABC with "write color sets" enabled, imported VRay Proxy and am rendering with Motion Blur Override turned on. I am receiving 1 sample of the blur with no temporal interpolation, it basically looks like the image was copied once, translated in space and lowered in opacity. Increasing Geometry Samples only fades the blur, but isn't doing anything to smear the image.

    Vray 3.6 and Phoenix 4.2, Maya 2018

Is this a file compatibility issue, or am I missing the motion blur settings?

    Hey,

V-Ray 3.6 is pretty old, we don't support it for a long time and I don't think we ever tested the abc fluid motion blur with it, so it might be because of the V-Ray version.

However, I hope this might not be the case. I am having a hard time figuring out what's wrong with the motion blur in the attached image - can you share the same frame but without any motion blur? Also, if you don't go through ABC export and render the Phoenix mesh with V-Ray 3 in Maya, how does it look? Both the abc and the direct approach should look the same.

    Thanks!

      Hey,

I just tried your setup with V-Ray 3.60.01 Official and it's working the same as in V-Ray 5, hotfix 2 Official.

      Cheers!

So does that mean that it is working correctly?

Thanks for telling me straight on my old VRay, I'll try VRay 5!

I used VRay5 and the same issue is occurring, just a duplicate fade of the liquid with no interpolation. I would upload an image, but there is some error when trying to do so. Am I missing something obvious though?

Hey, what Slavina meant what that she tried the same kind of setup with V-Ray 3.6 and V-Ray 5 and it was working correctly, so it's not about the V-Ray version - 3.6 should be fine.

What does the error say exactly? You managed to upload one image successfully, so maybe decrease the image size?

Did you try to render the Phoenix mesh directly in Maya, without exporting to ABC? As I said above, this should produce the exact same result as with the ABC, but there are less steps, so you can verify this way if the problem is in the ABC in the first place.

            Cheers!

Ah yes, got the attachment error as well. Maybe you can workaround it by uploading the image to some file sharing service, like dropbox or google drive?
