  • Out of memory in fluid simulation

Hi, I have made a fluid simulation from a source flooding on a ground plane in MAX 2022.
I have set the scene scale to 1 and the cell size to 1

Now when simulating the fluid, I get an out of memory error when reaching the 4.2 billion cells. I have 64 GB in my system.

The error sais also, that when using an adaptive grid (which I used) you can decrease the memory limit or disable preallocation. I searched on Google and into the Phoenix help files, but couldn't find how to set this?

Or, maybe there is also a better solution to help me out making this simulation?
    Thanks in afvance!

    Hey,

For Liquid sims the Adaptive Grid does not have preallocation - check the bottom of the Fire/Smoke Grid page: https://docs.chaos.com/display/PHX4MAX/FireSmoke+Grid

Could you send over the Phoenix log from "C:\ChaosPhoenix" copied after the error shoed up, but before you started 3ds Max again?

    Thank you!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply!!

      Attached is the logfile.

Hmmm, seems like this happens because really you are out of memory. During cache saving, the simulator needs more memory so it can compress the data when it writes in the cache files.

What you could do is to turn off any Grid Channels or Particle Channels that you don't use from the Output rollout. For example, turn off Grid Velocity and Particles Velocity if you are not going to use Motion Blur. Or turn off RGB if you will not use it to color the mesh or the particles.
