Finally, in tomorrow's nightlies for 3ds Max you would be able to find a couple new options that allow our smoke to forward scatter or backscatter!
One the left, forward scattering for cloudy volumes, in the middle - evenly distributed scattering that Phoenix had so far, and on the right - backscattering that would make smoke and volumes made up of hard particles like dust look more realistic. This is a Large Smoke preset with 4x the original resolution - expanded to 78 million voxels.
Render times for 800x600:
left one - 5 mins, middle one - 14 mins, right one - 27 mins on my 12-thread i7.
