  • Engine heat haze. How to?

I've simulated a smoke like effect coming out of two frigate chimneys but not really sure the best way to achieve a realistic distrotion of the type you get from heat rising out of a chimney into the atmosphere. I've tried a raytrace material on the pheonix sim with very low IOR but it doesn't look right.

Any ideas how to achieve this?

Reference image attached. It's subtle but you can see the heat haze rising from the chimney.

this is something i would normally do in comp. there's a variety of ways you could make the mask (particles, vray smoke, or just cards with noise patterns) and then use that mask to drive some blurs and distortions in comp.

Hey, have you tried the Heat Haze rendering mode of Phoenix?

There is also a rendered example at the bottom of the page.
