  • Watertight geometry

Does is matter if the mesh of my ship is watertight or not (all vertices are welded together)?

Yes, geometry should be watertight. There should be no overlapping faces, no open edges, etc.

If you use single face geometry like a simple plane for example - make sure to shell it first so that it has some thickness, otherwise the simulation might produce unexpected behavior.

So you are saying that in addition to it being watertight, the mesh hull should also have some thickness to it?

Depends on how it looks - if it is a closed volume it should be good. If it is just a bent plane (single face geometry) it will need some thickness.

So this example is just a Maya cube that I have made into a boat shape and is watertight. So I would not have to add thickness to it?Click image for larger version

This one is great, no need to do anything to it.
