  • Getting foam/splashes to render

I'm not entirely sure what i'm doing wrong here - but in the old and new versions i've never been able to get the foam/splashes to render.

If I open up the sample scenes it works fine. I opened the sub one, deleted the sub and saved a copy. I then merged all of this into a scene I wanted an ocean in - and the ocean shows up, the interactions works great, the scale didnt need altering much (ocean sim grid is about 1/2 size) the foam & splashes show up in the preview - but I cannot for the life of me get them to actually show up in the render.

Any ideas what I could be missing?

I've tried creating new ones and it still doesn't work. Something happens in between the original scene and the one i'm merging the phoenix objects into.
I've changed the size and brightness to all ends of the scale with no luck.

    Also, why does this happen?

my water cant flow around without becoming very unstable. This is the most stable i've had it in this scene, usually it just fires off randomly in all directions.

Whats your scene scale? Display units seems to be in mm, but what is the scene scale? I recommend to use larger than 1unit=1cm, meters or decimeters instead.
Also SPF 20 feels quite big value, I use typically 5-14 in most cases.

seems that the birth treshold for the splashes and foam could be lower too , maybe ?

as i see in the shot, your foam and splash checkboxes are disabled, you have to enable them.
the particles are displayed in the viewport, and their count is shown in the input panel. after you have particles, create a PHXFoam object to render them.
can't say why the water is unstable, perhaps the source is to blame. the settings are ok for me, the spf seems too high, but this is not a problem in the most cases, just slows down the simulation.

Hi, can you attach a scene so we can investigate the instability?

Different scene to the original question sorry - that's 2 separate issues I was having. I have another scene in which the particles show up, but I cant get the to render.

I have attached both scenes - although the 'no splashes' scene also has some issues with the instability - I cant get the water to be smooth across the top of the sphere, it always gets those weird spikes.

The instability issue is the one from the screenshot - I changed the spf around somewhat and changed some other numbers since that one, but it just gives me varying patterns of instability.

Smoke and fire is so much easier & more predictable in comparison... Still have no idea what most of these options even do for water, and how to fix the problems when they do occur.
Nice work on the ocean tools though - it looks great

edit: system units are in inches here. display doesnt matter does it?

I thought that by "instability" you mean that the liquid blows up You may check the "strong surface mode" option in order to keep the liquid together.

The splashes are missing from the renderer because their size is set to 0 - so theoretically they are there but practically they are invisible.
In order to render them the size parameter should have something different than 0 - for example with value 0.1 the particles becomes visible.
About the spikes on the liquid on top of the sphere like a0121536 mentioned earlier "strong surface mode" should be activated - this option is designed to fix such issues.

about the strong surface mode i'm not sure that it can explain the liquid roughness, with spf=4 and much higher resolution i achieve smooth liquid flowing over a round stone, so i'm still without explanation why your liquid is rough even with spf=20

Ha. Lots of buttons i'm forgetting to press - still trying to find my way around this interface. I didnt realise there was a size in the calculation area - I thought it wasscene appropriate and controlled with the multiplier.
The tap/instability test may be a scale issue, it is pretty small. Will try some experiments.

Will give those tests another go through today - i've now installed phoenix on a node so I can remote in and play around while I do other jobs. I'm hoping being able to constantly chip away at it and experiment will help me learn it more.

I know you're working on tutorials so I wont ask again - i'll just say I'm looking forward to them (and i'll bet you're looking forward to being able to link people to them...)

the size is not zero by default, so you have played with it
