  • Ocean mist settings help

    Hello-

I'm wrestling now with smoke, aka mist...

In this scene, I'm trying to get a fine mist, light rolling fog effect, like spray in a cave along the ocean...not dense smoke, not smoke that rises up but rather something light and airy that rolls out then disappears.

My attempts are getting closer but I need some assistance...

How do I shorten the life of the smoke so it doesn't settle on the ground? Could someone look at my settings/scene and assist with any pointers?

    Many thanks!

you can make the floor a source with negative discharge, this will pull the smoke downward.
or you can use fine splash particles instead smoke. with the air friction you can control the speed of falling, beside this you will have better visual appearance. i would prefer this approach, but keep in mind that you need at least 50M particles and 1TB hdd space.

I'll have to think about how to do the splash option, but for now, I've almost got the smoke option looking decent.
But with the smoke, is there not a way to have it disappear after a certain amount of time, for example give it a life of 20 seconds and then it evaporates? Not at the discharge source, that should keep going, but rather the smoke that has been around and settled should evaporate after say 20 seconds? Right now the sim ends with the entire floor covered in about 12" of smoke...

Isn't there any improvement if you boost the smoke dissipation parameter?

          Thanks for the quick reply!
That's what I was thinking would work based on reading the help, but whether dissipation is 0 or 1 the smoke remains for all 900 frames. I like being able to adjust the smoke buoyancy to get it to rise and fall which is great, but having it fade away and not reach the edges of the sim would be even better.

Ah, I see - that's because you have enabled Liquids - we have a condition that smoke dissipation will be skipped in liquid mode. Will your setup work ok if you turn off liquids? Otherwise we could try and remove this limitation. I also see that you have enabled burning - to me it seems this is not necessary either.

Fantastic! I had liquid enabled with a low discharge, but turning off liquid and increasing discharge and now using dissipation, does just what I need. Thank you for you great, fast advice!
