  • Simulating foam and splashes "on top" of a finished liquid simulation

I soon have a finished liquid simulation (a boat in an ocean).
Is there any way to simulate splashes and foam on top of the liquid sim, without resimulating the liquid itself? If so, what are the steps for this?

    Hello,

If you are on a nightly, this will be fairly simple - enable Resimulation and make changes to the foam/splash, etc. and then run the simulation again. This will keep the liquid shape and only apply changes to the particles. You need to have Liquid and Velocity exported from your original simulation.

it's possible without nightlies too, but there is no detailed control , you have to use resimulation with particles resimulation option

I am using the official 2.2 release for 3dsmax 2016.

Just to get it straight: When either particle resimulation or grid resimulation is enabled, and the resimulation input path points to an exisiting liquid sim cache, it will not re-do the liquid simulation? And I should still use the normal start-button under simulation to start resimulation?

I have to say I find the resimulation dialog a bit counter-intuitive ... If nothing else, it should have it`s own "start resimulation" - button where it could throw an error if it cannot find an exisitng liquid simulation cache

          yes, you got it correctly.
the resimulation dialog is complicated by the fire/smoke resimulation abilities, in fact the only option used by the liquid simulation is "particle resimulation" and of course the cache settings
btw, in the nightlies the liquid and fire/smoke simulators are separated, and every object has its own UI.

            Sounds good
Because of reasons I have to use the official 2.2 build . Based on what I read at this forum, it sounds almost like you are remaking the whole plugin :P

no, not the whole, only the liquid simulator is purely new, the fire/smoke is the same with some new features.
