  • I just can't get this to look right...

I've been trying to get this look for a couple weeks now, and just can't get it. I've read as much of the help files as I can, and asked questions here and there on this forum, as well as other places, but I just can't get it. The attached screen shot has just the hull of the ship we're trying to simulate (the grid's only interaction), and on the right of the attached file is a reference photo of how it should look. We just can't get that massive foam and wake to come from the front of the ship and move off to the sides like it shows in the photo.

The scene is in meters, the ship is the correct size as the real-world ship (337 m long), and since the model was imported, the xforms have been reset and collapsed. The ship is moving close to it's full speed (22 knots of 30 knots, or 11.3 m/s out of 15.5 m/s). I pulled the side panel out with all of our settings for the grid, and displayed the PhoenixFD properties window to even show that I set the motion velocity effect higher than 1 (for the ship). I can't upload the scene due to the nature of my work, so I have to do the screen shot. We're using the latest version of Phoenix: 3.00.02 Build 170109

Can anyone tell me what we're missing? I've messed with a bunch of settings and just can't get it right.

From what I can see your foam and splashes are not enough. You can decrease the thresholds for both of them and try again (just be careful - if they are too low you will get a lot of particles and the simulation will be slow).

I did reduce the velocity threshold for the foam to 2 or 3 (I think) and it produced foam on the surface of the water where the waves were from the displacement, but didn't really affect the foam around the ship much.

Could do with seeing your dynamics panel. I know you have mentioned it but these type of scenes I always have larger velocity for the collision object (the ship). Even in other solvers I always had to increase the velocity from real world speed etc as other people have on their tests. 27 meter foam pattern seems a bit insane? :P Assuming you havent got wetting/consume liquid on also?

also, is your hull a closed mesh (much better for simulation)? if yes, tick "clear inside"

Yup the hull is closed and the "Clear Inside" is ticked. Thought I had the dynamics panel in there, but guess I missed it Nothing has really been changed in there though, in the past I never really needed to beyond the steps per frame.

And yea, the 27 meter foam pattern I didn't even notice LOL Probably some mistake we did at some point

Thanks for the feedback y'all! With a mixture of speeding up the boat, adjusting the motion velocity, and just scaling the verts at the nose of the ship (slightly) I'm getting a result thats much closer to the image

Would love to see some closeups render. I tried but failed.
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

yes, show us when you are happy with the result.
