  • Going between max and maya

Is there a way to send Phoenix data back and forth between max and maya? After showing the people within our company what Phoenix can do, they decided to make it our standard for our water simulation when working with 3D. That gives us access to a full 50 blade rendering farm now, but some of those machines use Maya and some of them use Max. Is there any way for us to convert the Max scenes to Maya with the same Phoenix data (and vice versa) without having to re-simulate the data?

    Hello,

You can load the caches between Max and Maya without a problem. You can simulate in Max and load the caches from the Phoenix Input rollout in Maya and if you equalize the render settings you should get pretty much the same result (or vice versa you can sim in Maya and load the caches in Max). If you don't need Foam/Splashes you can use the VRayVolumeGrid to render the caches. If you do need them though you will need to use Phoenix.

Hey, this is great news! For now the caches are interchangeable between Max and Maya, you just have to flip the YZ axis from the input panel when importing them from Max into Maya (there is no such option for the reverse process, we have to add it). Apart from that, we're preparing the ground for transferring simulation and render settings via presets between Max and Maya, but this will take a little longer.

What about the grid itself? Would we have to just relay the information about the size of the grid to the other software? It won't export into an FBX file will it? Could we save a preset and open it in the other program?

Just create a grid and set input folder to cache files. That's it. They are already simulated so no matter what's the grid. If you want to migrate the settings you can export a simulation preset with the settings. It's in the Simulation roll-out menu.

You don't need to set the grid size if you are just importing the cache. You will need to set your position manually though or export a helper with the grid's position to place it properly.
