I will try that as soon as I can get it to work again.

I updated to the 4.10.00 version today and now that scene crashes to desktop when I hit render. Presumably I need this nightly but am unsure where to download that from.

that looks GREAT and pretty much my desired result.. just to stop the crashing now.

Mine crashed so I updated to the latest nightly which is linked above and it fixed things, so try that.
I am updating this scene after some optimising and further testing, to get quality up and render time down. I can post the update when it's done
and it should help.
Thanks for the initial post, by the way, as without it I wouldn't have been challenged to try to fix it. Similarly with your god ray thing
And quite by coincidence I then almost immediately had a job come in needing some varied liquid sims. All good stuff
