  • Reflection/refraction with flames in glass - artifacts

Hi everyone, looking for some advice as I've tried a lot of combinations of settings in vray and phoenix render settings. I'm using vrayNext update 1.2 and phoenixfd 3.14. The flames are within a glass enclosure. I'm getting a lot of artifacts in the reflection, to where you can even see what looks like the emissive lights as a type of point cloud. That glass material has depth of 10 on refract and reflect. Using LC/BF render method. When excluding from reflections, it gets cleaned up a lot, but not entirely and it looks more fake at that point.
I have tried so many combinations of troubleshooting that I can list them all, so any input would valuable. Thank you!
Here are some combinations of renders.
Default = as is phoenix setup. Reflection off = set phoenix to not reflect. Lights off = setting phoenix to not emit light

Spent a lot more time trying different combination of settings and this time I got what I'm looking for, although it comes with a catch. My glass material had a glossiness value for reflection set to .98, if i set the glossiness to 1.0, its artifact free as shown in the image below. So its a trade off with samples. If stainless steel was the background with a low reflection glossiness, it would probably be a nightmare to render. To render this version with glass at 1 glossiness took about a minute. With .98 glossiness it was around 30 mins and still didn't look good so the sampler or something was working very hard. Anyone know a trick that would speed up blurry reflections in this scenario?

it may be related to the vray option "glossy as GI", if you need the originalvalue, try to disable it

Hey, still looks like something might be broken, would it be possible to send the scene over so we can check what's up with the glossiness?

Yes, I have it trimmed down and ready to send. Where or how do i send the file? Do you need the cache files? It is a real simple fire sim that can be cached in a few minutes up to around frame 40.

Awesome, thank you! Please shoot it to support at chaosgroup dot com. No need for the the cache files - I hope we'll be able to reproduce it with a new simulation.

Ahhh, I think I found it, I knew this issue sounded familiar - we've fixed it in Phoenix 4.10: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/m/mobile...#page/60890372

I will port the fix back to the 3.14 nightly builds here: https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/main#/phoenix3max

.. and will.ping you when it's there so you can verify it's working

Nice, thank you. I have phoenix4 on its way also, so no matter the issue will be solved. Too bad I was digging deep to solve something that was already solved hahah Do you still need the file? I would guess not at this moment. Thanks again!

The fix is just picked to Phoenix 3 and will be in tomorrow's nightlies. Please send the scene over only in case it does not help

                  Cheers!

Hello! I'm experiencing a similar issue. I tried downloading the nightly (tried both 30388 30405) and can't seem to resolve the issue. 3ds max 2017 Vray Next update 3.1

I'm trying to render smoke inside a refracting sphere. Doesn't matter what the glossy setting seems to be. (In the example it is 1.0).

                    Any ideas? Thanks.

Doh! Spoke too soon. When debugging this issue I had switched the Sampler Type to BOX, and forgot to switch it back, all good!

Whew it's indeed fixed in the nightlies, so it would be worrying to see it still happen. Thank you for the update!
