  • Vray not rendering Phoenix smoke

Hi, I am new to Phoxnix FD. I am trying to create a scene with a car drving through and produces smoke/dust behind. I have simulated smoke effect successfully and it appears in the 3dsmax viewport.

But the problem is the smoke is just not being rendered in vray frame buffer. Any idea about what I am missing?

Heres my file on google drive https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WyM...ew?usp=sharing

    Hey,

Thanks for the scene! The smoke is actually rendered in the V-Ray frame buffer, but it's the same color like the background and it's hard to be seen. Another thing that might be the problem is the Smoke Opacity.
Maybe you should consider changing the Smoke Constant Color and increasing the Simple Smoke Opacity value. The options that control the diffuse color and the transparency part of the volumetric shader could be found in the Rendering rollout -> Volumetric Options... tab.

Here you could find some information about these options: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...moke+Rendering, https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...er+Smoke+Color, https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...+Smoke+Opacity.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply! But unfortunately even if I tweaked around the constant color and opacity still nothing happen.

There is a screenshot of my main file.

        Hey,

Can you tell me which Phoenix FD build you are using - the information could be found in the Simulation rollout -> About.
Also, can you tell me which V-Ray version you have installed? You can find the V-Ray version in the Render settings window → Settings tab → About V-Ray rollout.

        Thank you!

Ah, I just saw you set the Minimum Visible Opacity to 1, will it help if you set it to 0.001?

Oh yes, Minimum Visible Opacity = 1 means that nothing will render Gotta lower this to 0.001 as it was by default

                  Hey,

What if you increase the Simple smoke opacity to 1, does it get better?

I got good news and bad news guys!!

Good news is the smoke is actually being render in production render mode but somehow cant be rendered in interactive mode...but anyway at least it could be rendered. Anyone know why and how to fix it though?

Bad news is the simulation is creating some weird result. I set the simulation in between frame 40-70, but before the first frame and after the last frame some giant smoke will appear on the top. Is there anyway to erase existing smoke simulation/animation and simulate it again?

Sorry for being ignorant and I really appreciate the patient from all of you.

                      Hey,

As for the IPR rendering - we don't have IPR CPU rendering for Volumetrics currently implemented in 3ds Max. It's in our To Do List.
Meanwhile you could use the IPR GPU mode - it should work correctly for your setup.
As for the "giant smoke" - these are probably some old caches. When you set a range, the caches only from that range will be overridden, but the ones that are out of this range will stay, so if you don't need them, you could delete them.

                      Hope this helps!

Oh sorry I did not know that. But thank you anyway! Now I have tried a few renders and the smoke seems to work fine.

Yeah, I just got exactly the same issue. Turned out both phoenix FD and Vray volumetric grid are the same, they will render just fine in GPU interactive, GPU production, CPU production, just NOT CPU interactive. I guess everyone already knows that. Look forward to the fix or at least an error message to warn users when it's currently under CPU interactive mode.

Hey, in tomorrow's Phoenix nightlies V-Ray IPR CPU in 3ds Max should render Phoenix Simulators and Voxel Shaders.

                            Cheers!
