  • Phoenix FD 3.14.00 Foam disappearing

    Hello Chaos Group / Svetlin,

I have a scene where (~4.5M) foam particles going outside of the liquid container for an ocean mesh randomly disappear from frame to frame. The preview shows the foam particles are there but are not rendered. There must be a setting I've done that's creating the problem but I can't find it. Any suggestions?

    Thank you,
    Cyril

    Hey,

Could it be that those particles are underwater? Does it help if you increase the vertical offset parameter in the Particle Shader settings?

Ah, also please check the info on the Storage Quality and the pics showing how it would look when particles compression is not enough: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ssionartifacts Could it be that this is the problem? This will be the worse case than Georgi's suggestion because you will have to simulate all over again, so try his suggestions first...

Thank you both for the suggestions. I did look at vertical offset, it did not solve the problem. But I did notice grid like patterns in the foam that I could not get rid of, I thought making the particle shader multiplier of 2.0 would solve the problem but it didn't. Right now the storage quality is the default of 14. Most of the sequence is fine, it's the last 200frames of a 700 frame sequence that has these errors.
Can I resim from around frame 500 with a higher storage quality of 19? or do I have to resim and rerender the entire sequence?

        Thank you,
        Cyril

Hey, Resim as in "Resimulation" is not the right thing - you can Restore the simulation from frame 500 with the higher Storage Quality: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...lation-Actions

Sorry bad writing on my part, yes restoring. Thank you I will get that a try. Thanks again!

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but it would be nice to have separate storage quality settings for the grid and for particles (or for ostriches, as autocorrect wanted me to write ).

So I tried restoring the simulation at higher numbers up to 20, I even tried uncompressed and I'm still getting bands of particles disappearing. Is there a particle rendering limit somewhere? It's strange that it is only happening to the foam particles, the splash particles render fine.

Hmmm, off the top of my head, I can't think of something simple that could cause this. If it's not an option for you to try it out with a latest Phoenix 4 nightly, can you send the scene over so we can see what's happening? Phoenix 3.14 is now 20 months of bugfixes and improvements behind, so this might be something we've already fixed...

                  Cheers!
