  • How to render out deep data of phoenix fd sim?

    Hello, I need your help.

I want to export different Phoenix FD Sims in one Maya Scene over different render layers as different deep exrs.

Even if I set the rendermode to "Volumetric Geometry" in the render settings of the "PhoenixFDSim1",
there is nothing visible in the exported EXR(deep) in Nuke.
    https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/PHX4MAYA/Rendering

Can you help me with this?

    Cheers
    J

    Hey,

Seems to be working on our side. In order to render in deep you need to use Volumetric Geometry mode.
Then switch to the Bucket sampler (the Progressive sampler is still not supported for deep rendering) in the V-Ray Settings and you set the output to EXR(deep) in the Image Format options in the Maya render settings.

If all of the above is covered, then may be it's something specific to your scene and we will need a bit more info such as V-Ray version, Phoenix version and the scene if possible.

    Thanks!

      Hey Georgi,

      blagodarya for your instructions!

This time I get deep information.

      I have another question:

When I choose the geometry surface render mode for a ocean setup
I get some black points in rendering and I wonder if it has to do with the shader?
Do i have to set up the sim differently for a geometry

I attached the maya scene file, the rendered deep EXR, camera, screenshot of nuke quick
setup and nuke script for better understanding.

        Thanks for the scene!

When rendering liquids or oceans, there is no need to use the Volumetric Geometry mode ( it is needed only if you want to render fire/smoke in deep or you need render elements). For liquids/oceans just use the Mesh, Ocean mesh or Cap mesh mode.

As for the Maya scene, your V-Ray Plane seems to be rotated -90 degrees, not sure if this is intended but produced a bit strange results. So I rotated it back to 0, disabled the dome light and added a Sun and Sky so that there will be some better reflections.
Then switched the Phoenix Simulator to Ocean mode and rendered. You can check how it looks in the attached screenshots.

        Cheers!

            Hey,

            I have one last question:
When I render my scene out in VFB its works fine and I can see a result.
When I render the same scene in Batch Render it exports just a black frame (I have lights in the scene)
When I render the current frame I get following error: // Error: V-Ray : [ExrFileData::setChannels] -2: No resolution specified yet //
How can I manage it to export the like it should be as EXR (deep) with the Sim?
            Here my scene file:

For batch rendering with Phoenix check this out - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...gwithMayaBatch

Which versions of Phoenix and V-Ray are you using?

When do you get the error, when rendering with Batch render or rendering to the VFB in Maya?
I can't get the same error using the latest V-Ray 5 and Phoenix 4.41

                Hey,

                thanx Georgi!
I am using Vray Version 5 and PhenixFD Version 4.4.

                Sometimes helps reading the documentation.
Now in Batch Rendering I don't get any error anymore.
It was just the render path that I have to change in Input to a absolute path and in output too.

When I choose "Render Current frame" I got the error "// Error: V-Ray : Could not create deep .exr file //"
but i think I will not need this option!

                Cheerio
