  • Smoke expansion at the end of simulator

Hi, my rocket smoke sim is making some big expansion when it reaches the edge of my sim box. I have the grid expanding out until my rocket goes past my cameras view, but somthing happens when the smoke reaches the limit/edge.
I just tried to download a new nightly and restore from a point just before the expansion happens, but I seem to get the same result. Any ideas? See screenshots.

    Hey,

Looks like the smoke bunching up at the open grid border could be a limitation of the solver. I would guess that it might be because of the large scale Vorticity, but in any case, changing the Dynamics settings will change your simulation results, possibly a lot, so not sure this is a valid workaround for you.

    Cheers!

      Hey,

Another thing that can cause the problem, is that you are running out of ram. You can check the Phoenix log file, located in C:\ChaosPhoenix and see if there is a message that informs you that you are out of ram and the Grid won't expand.
If you have enough ram, you could try setting the Adaptive Grid to Speed. This way the Grid will expand by using the Velocity channel and will keep up with the movement of the fluid.

      Hope this helps!

It's bunching up at the grid border like Svetlin said. I don't think it is running out of ram (I have 64 gb, and I couldn't see anything in the log), but rather it hits the limit I have set as maximum expansion and then starts to misbehave. Maybe I can try to turn off the (rocket) source before it goes beyond the simulator limits, and maybe increase the maximum even more so it never hits the edge. It might get very large though.
