  • Sim Artefacts

    Hi there,

I came across some weird artefacts in my boat simulation. Not sure where to find the solution to this issue because I tend to use the same setup and didn't have this issue before.
I've added my sim & grid setup, please let me know if there is anything more I should provide.

To be clear: it is about the unnatural straight lines appearing in the water. Also worth metioning is that I use Corona for rendering

    Thanks in advance!

Ah, how about if you increase the Storage Quality option of your simulation in the Output rollout and simulate again?

The mesh is the same between all renderers in 3ds Max, so it's more likely to be related to this particular simulation.

      Hi Nikolov,
Thanks for your reply. I've changed the storage quality from 14 to 19 and did a rerun of the simulation. The stripes are still apparant.
There are no objects in the scene that could cause this. I run the sim with a xref of the boat attached to a dummy. Could this be a phoenix 4 vs 5 issue?

Oh, which Phoenix version do you use? Could you screenshot me the About rollout?

          Attached is the about box.

But I realised that this boat is slower than usually so I guess I need to increase my steps per frame.

Hmm, if you still get the artifacts, could you please send the scene over to Support via the "Submit a request" form at the top right of the support.chaos.com page.

Hi Svetlin, last time I didn't have the time to put in more time before I had to deliver the images. But now there is a new project with the same issues. I've prepared a file which I've submitted through the support page like you suggested.
Thanks in advance for your efforts!

Hey, we had one change that is not even in the official Phoenix 5.10 that we released the other day. It's only in the nightlies here: https://nightlies.chaos.com/#/phoeni...ghtly/20230119 Could you check if this build makes any positive difference?

                Cheers!

Hey, thanks for that. I've installed that nightly but unfortunately nothing changes. It is mainly the large horizontal displacement what is odd.. using displacement over the water surface would obviously mask that but what if the client wants to see the boat sailing in calm water?

[edit] I've reverted phoenix to 4.41 but the artefacts are visible there as well. So maybe it is bad usage from my side?
[edit 2] I just got a reply that it is a known issue. Thanks for your effort!

Dang, yes, so if last week's change that's in the nightlies didn't help, then the hope is that the next one would make a difference. A colleague is looking at the issue as we speak...

I usually have such artefacts when I use V-Ray displacement while camera or object located far away from the center of coordinates (0,0,0). I use the trick. I link all scene objects into point (dummy) object and move it such a way that the point of interest was close to the center of coordinates. If your simulation is close to the center of coordinates and you still have such problem then I don't know, but I still believe this is a displacement issue.

Hi Dennis, Thanks so much for your reply. The container for the sim isn't oddly far from 0,0,0 (50 meters at most, because this is the distance the boat travels in the animation) so this can't be the case.
