  • Interface and tutorials

I have the latest version of Phoenix for Max 2024. I'm working my way through the Chaos Phoenix tutorials but they are very confusing since the interface is different from when the tutorials were uploaded. I’m now working on the dust devil https://docs.chaos.com/display/PHX4MAX/Dust+Devil.
It says “Set the Cell Size to 8 to increase the resolution of the grid. Set the X/Y/ Z size to 80/80/20.” But there is no “cell size”. But there is a “voxel size”. Is that the same thing? It then says ”Enable Maximum Expansion and set the X/Y/Z dimensions according to your needs.” There is no “Maximum Expansion”. What could my (Phoenix) 'needs' be?

Indeed - the tutorials were made with an older version of the software and since then some of the controls were renamed.

Yes, cell size and voxel size are the same thing.

In your screenshot - there is an option called "Limit Maximum Expansion" (the second one from bottom to top) - when you enable the checkbox for it you will be able to adjust the maximum size of the adaptive grid.

Great. Thanks! I'm trying to create a 600 frame, larger and faster spinning dust devil. I changed the frames from 1-200 to 50-650 and lengthened the animation of the noise in the simulation object and the vortex. Any other suggestions? I can't find any tutorials on dust devils or tornadoes.

The tutorial should cover all the important points, but if you think something is missing - let us know and we will help.

Hi, I'm trying to extrapolate the Chaos dust devil tutorialhttps://docs.chaos.com/display/PHX4MAX/Dust+Devil. Any ideas on how to make it taller and sustain a twisting dust devil over 500+ frames without immediately dissipating?

I, while extrapolating from the tutorial made two clips. https://mega.nz/file/g14Q2SZT#ffn8lS...hixxXG-6a2uQPg.
The first changed the frames to begin at 60 and ending at 600, animating the vortex till frame 500, increasing the grid height and increasing the emitter noise phase over the increased frames, while also extending the source velocity of 500 to 500 frames' with the simulation starting at 60 and ending at 600, animating the vortex till frame 500, increasing the grid height and increasing the emitter noise phase over the increased frames, while also extending the source velocity of 500 to 500 frames.

For the second one, I tried to extend the twister dust devil by lowering the dynamics of smoke dissipation. It got worse. Any ideas?

            Hey,

I replied in the other thread here -https://forums.chaos.com/forum/phoenix-fd/phoenix-fd-general/1199665-how-to-extend-the-dust-devil-from-the-turoial-500-frames
